The year it became a tournament
Eight men, six sessions, a gold cup and a set of written rules. The Hozel Rockets won by five, Jack Church won the gross by forty-nine, and the man with the highest handicap in the field won the tournament.
Eighteen months earlier there had been four men, a spreadsheet of tee times and no trophy. Lisbon had eight players, two named teams with a captain each, three flights, a points system, a written rulebook and a gold cup with red, white and blue ribbons on it, bought by James Leigh.
The step up was deliberate and everybody noticed. This is the week the Masturds stopped being a golf holiday with names on it.
The cup · Hozel Rockets 11½ – 6½ Sagres Swingers
Eighteen points, ten to win, six sessions across six days.
It was over on the Wednesday. West Cliffs played nine shots harder than any other course on the schedule and Wilkinson's side took three and a half points out of four on it, going five clear with three sessions left. Leigh's team never got closer than four again.
The gross
Church won the individual strokeplay by forty-nine shots.
Leigh and Wilkinson tied for second on 492. Stretton 503, Mitchell 510, Beswick 534, Cartwright 544, Allan 557. Church's spread from best to worst was nine shots across five different golf courses, the tightest in the field, and his 82 at Royal Óbidos is the low round in the archive.
It is a margin that stops being a competition and starts being a weather report.
The net
And then the tournament was won by the worst golfer in it.
Gus Beswick came to Portugal off 29.4, the highest index in the field bar one, and finished seventh of eight on raw scoring. He also went round in a net total of 374, eleven better than anybody else, and took the overall net title.
Church won Flight A on 385, one shot clear of Stretton across five rounds — the closest finish of the week, and a decent explanation for why Stretton spent every evening on the putting green at West Cliffs while the rest of the field watched him from inside the bar.
Beswick, unbeaten
The net title was not the half of it. Beswick played three singles matches in Lisbon and lost none of them.
On the Friday at Royal Óbidos he beat Church three and two, off 29.4 against 11.5. On the Saturday at West Cliffs he beat Cartwright four and three. On the Wednesday he halved with Allan while shooting 119.
He returned four and a half cup points, the highest individual return of any player on either team, from the losing side.
The captain
At the other end of it, James Leigh.
Leigh arrived as the second-best golfer in the field on index — 11.8, three tenths behind Church — captained the Sagres Swingers, and finished the week with two cup points. Both came from the Thursday scramble at Bom Sucesso, where all four of his players were credited the same two points for a team result.
Nothing from the four-ball, nothing from the low ball, nothing from either singles day. He lost to Church twice and to Allan once, and he is the man who paid for the trophy.
Guy Mitchell did not fare much better: played three singles, lost three, twice to Cartwright and once to Wilkinson.
What Lisbon left behind
Three things, and all of them shaped 2026.
The first is the trophy, which went home to Nottingham with Wilkinson and now has to be carried to British Columbia.
The second is the head-to-head record — the first proper archive this tournament has ever had, and the basis of every price, projection and scouting note published since.
The third is a correction. Every format in Lisbon was played at a flat 100% of handicap, which is not how any of them are supposed to work. In a four-ball it quietly hands the advantage to whichever pair carries the bigger combined index; the scramble, meanwhile, was played off scratch, which simply gave the session to whoever struck it best — and it was the only session the Sagres Swingers won outright all week.
The 2026 edition runs proper WHS allowances for the first time. Which means Lisbon was the last Masturds where the format was doing some of the work.
Eight men went to Portugal. Two of them are not coming to Canada.
