Gus Beswick has the highest handicap of anyone travelling, the worst raw scoring in the archive, and an unbeaten singles record. The handicap system exists for exactly this.
In Lisbon, Gus Beswick shot 534 over five counting rounds. Seventh of eight. He beat only Harris Allan, who is not invited back. On raw scoring he was, and remains, the worst golfer in this tournament.

Beswick won the net on 374. His mean net score across the week was 74.8, better than two shots clear of the entire field, and he is the most volatile scorer in it. In a competition decided by a five-round total, volatility is an asset rather than a flaw: it only asks that the good days are very good.

On the Friday at Royal Óbidos he beat Jack Church three and two, playing off 29.4 against Church's 11.5. On the Saturday at West Cliffs he beat Tom Cartwright four and three. On the Wednesday he halved with Harris Allan, the only other man in the field to finish the week unbeaten in singles.
He returned four and a half cup points, more than any player on either team, on the losing side.
The model makes Beswick favourite against every man in the field. Church included, at 59–41. There is not a single match-up on the board in which he starts behind.

And the index is still falling — 29.4 to 26.8 since Portugal, with forty-four stableford points posted in August. A high handicap that is coming down is the most dangerous object in a net tournament, because the number on the card lags the golf being played.
Beswick is a chartered surveyor who has ground his way up a new firm to director and works hours that make the golf improbable. He is, by Church's account, one of the kindest and most thoughtful men in the group.
He is also the man who arrived at the house in Myrtle Beach in 2024, located the master bedroom and its en suite, and took it without consulting anybody. Two years on that remains unaddressed, and it is the only known instance of Gus Beswick moving decisively before anyone else in the field had worked out what was happening.
He is the first pick in this draft and it is not close. The only thing that could see him slide is a captain who keeps looking at the gross column.
